## Biography

Robert Studley Forrest Hughes was an Australian art critic, writer and television documentary producer. Born in Sydney in 1938, he studied at St Ignatius' College, Riverview, and the University of Sydney before moving to Europe in the mid-1960s and then to New York in 1970, where he became art critic for Time magazine.

Hughes wrote several books on art and history, including the television series and companion book *The Shock of the New* (1980) and the bestseller *The Fatal Shore* (1986). He appeared as himself in the 1995 documentary *Crumb*, discussing the work of cartoonist Robert Crumb. He died in New York in 2012.
