## Biography

Robert Klane (1941–2023) was an American screenwriter, novelist and director. A 1963 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he began his career with the novels *The Horse is Dead* (1968) and *Where's Poppa?* (1970), the latter of which he adapted into a 1970 feature film.

Klane wrote screenplays for films including *Every Little Crook and Nanny* (1972), *Fire Sale* (1977), *The Man with One Red Shoe* (1985), *National Lampoon's European Vacation* (1985) and *Weekend at Bernie's* (1989). He also wrote six episodes of the television series *M*A*S*H* (1972) and contributed to *Tracey Takes On...*, for which he shared an Emmy Award in 1997. His directing credits include *Thank God It's Friday* (1978) and *Weekend at Bernie's II* (1993).

Klane died of kidney failure in Woodland Hills, California, on 29 August 2023.
