He is best known for playing the mechanoid Kryten in the science-fiction sitcom *Red Dwarf*, a role he took on from the third series in 1989. He has also contributed writing to the series, including co-writing the 1997 episode "Beyond a Joke". Llewellyn first came to the attention of the show's producers through his one-man stage show *Mammon, Robot Born of Woman* at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
