Born on 10 February 1970 in Horsham, Sussex, he was educated at Reigate Grammar School and the University of Exeter. He served as resident dramatist at the Northcott Theatre in Exeter and has written plays produced by Alan Ayckbourn and others. Shearman wrote the Doctor Who television episode *Dalek* (2005), adapting elements from his Big Finish audio play *Jubilee*. He has contributed multiple audio dramas to the Big Finish *Doctor Who* range and written several plays for BBC Radio 4 in association with Jarvis & Ayres Productions.
