## Biography

Robert Strauss (8 November 1913 – 20 February 1975) was an American character actor. He began his career on the Broadway stage in the 1930s, appearing in productions including *Twelfth Night* and *Macbeth*, before specialising in comedy roles.

He originated the part of Stanislas 'Animal' Kuzawa in the 1951 Broadway production of *Stalag 17* and reprised it in the 1953 film adaptation, receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Strauss appeared in numerous films of the 1950s, including *The Seven Year Itch* (1955) as Mr Kruhulik, *The Man with the Golden Arm* (1955) as Schwiefka, and *Attack* (1956) as Pfc. Bernstein. He also worked extensively in television, with guest roles in series such as *Perry Mason*, *Bewitched* and *Get Smart*.
