## Biography

Robert Vaughn (1932–2016) was an American actor whose career in film and television spanned six decades. He was born Robert Francis Vaughn in New York City and made his screen debut in an uncredited role in *The Ten Commandments* (1956).

Vaughn gained prominence with an Oscar-nominated performance in *The Young Philadelphians* (1959) and as Lee in *The Magnificent Seven* (1960). He starred as Napoleon Solo in the television series *The Man from U.N.C.L.E.* (1964–68) and appeared as Senator Parker in *The Towering Inferno* (1974). Other notable film roles include Walter Chalmers in *Bullitt* (1968) and Ross Webster in *Superman III* (1983). On television he played General Hunt Stockwell in *The A-Team* (1983) and Albert Stroller in the BBC series *Hustle* (2004–12). He held a PhD from the University of Southern California.
