## Fi1m on Robin Weigert

> Robin Weigert makes tough women seem capable of being hurt without making them suddenly soft. We value her for that, though her smaller film roles offer only a partial account of what she can do.

Calamity Jane's swearing and unkempt appearance in *Deadwood* (2004–2006) make a forceful introduction to Robin Weigert. Her physical and vocal transformation is conspicuous; the vulnerability she brings to tough women is the reason to keep watching. Jane was her breakthrough, and the association with toughness could limit what others subsequently expected of her. Her work since has included enough therapists and attorneys to suggest a second casting habit, this time built around professional authority.

*The Good German* (2006) places her among the supporting cast as Hannelore. Steven Soderbergh presents 1945 Berlin as a 1946 studio might have filmed it, and the effect is often striking. The muddled story and passive hero are harder to forgive, because they leave so little reason to care about what happens. Weigert is working within a film that keeps everyone, including us, at a distance. We cannot recommend it simply because she is in it.

*Synecdoche, New York* (2008) is the stronger recommendation, with Weigert as Adult Olive in Charlie Kaufman's drama about a man staging his own life. Philip Seymour Hoffman makes its complicated story worth following. We were distressed by its repeated reminders of mortality, even when we began to tire of them. It rewards the effort, but recommending it chiefly for Weigert would misrepresent both the size of her part and what makes the film work.

*Concussion* (2013) changes the emphasis by giving her the lead as Abby, a housewife who becomes an escort. Dr Amanda Reisman, her recurring therapist in *Big Little Lies* (2017–2019), offers a different use for her precision in intimate scenes. These parts help correct the idea that Jane's roughness is all she has to offer, though the repeated professional roles carry their own risk of familiarity. Start with *Deadwood*, then try *Concussion* to follow her in a leading part.

Her film roles include Hannelore in *The Good German* (2006) and Abby in *Concussion* (2013).
