Born in Calgary, Alberta, on 7 December 1910, he began his career in the late 1930s as a stuntman and bit player for Paramount Pictures before gaining prominence in the 1940s. He appeared in serials such as *G-Men vs. the Black Dragon* (1943) and *Secret Service in Darkest Africa* (1943), and in feature films including *Wake Island* (1942), *North West Mounted Police* (1940) and *Christmas in July* (1940).
