He was sometimes credited as Rudolph or Rudolfo Acosta. Acosta studied drama at Los Angeles City College, UCLA and the Pasadena Playhouse, and received a scholarship to the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. After serving in the US Navy during the Second World War, he began his career in Mexican films before appearing in John Ford’s *The Fugitive* (1947). He became a familiar presence in Westerns including *Hondo* (1953), *Flaming Star* (1960), *One-Eyed Jacks* (1961), *How the West Was Won* (1962), *The Sons of Katie Elder* (1965) and *Return of the Seven* (1966).
