## Biography

John Roger Hammond (also credited as Roger Hammond) was an English character actor who appeared in numerous films and television series, often in period dramas and supporting roles as clergymen, doctors or authority figures.

Born in Stockport, he attended Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he read English before switching to archaeology and anthropology and took part in many student productions alongside Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and joined the Arts Theatre Company in 1963. His first television appearance was in 1964.

Hammond originated the role of Dr Baker in Alan Bennett's stage play *The Madness of George III* and reprised it in the 1994 film *The Madness of King George*. Other notable screen credits include *The King's Speech* (2010), *Around the World in 80 Days* (2004), *Bedazzled* (2000), the HBO series *Rome* (2005) and episodes of *Doctor Who* (1963).
