## Biography

Roger Kemble Furse (11 September 1903 – 19 August 1972) was an English production designer and costume designer who worked in both theatre and film. He was educated at St George's School, Windsor Castle, Eton College and the Slade School of Fine Art. He began designing for the stage in 1934 and entered film work in the early 1940s.

Furse became a frequent collaborator with Laurence Olivier. He designed the costumes and armour for Olivier's *Henry V* (1944) and worked on the same director's *Hamlet* (1948), for which he won Academy Awards for both art direction and costume design. Further credits with Olivier include production design on *Richard III* (1955) and *The Prince and the Showgirl* (1957). His other film work includes production design on *Bonjour Tristesse* (1958) and *Spartacus* (1960, uncredited).

He also designed for ballet and numerous stage productions, including transfers to Broadway, and received a Tony Award nomination for scenic design.
