## Biography

Roger Planchon (1931–2009) was a French actor, playwright, theatre director and filmmaker. He began working in the theatre in 1949 and founded the Théâtre de la Comédie in Lyon in 1952. From 1957 he directed the Théâtre de la Cité in Villeurbanne, which became the Théâtre National Populaire in 1972.

Planchon appeared in numerous films, including a small role as the guard on a bike in Robert Bresson's *A Man Escaped* (1956). His later screen credits include *Dossier 51* (1978), *I... for Icarus* (1979), *The Return of Martin Guerre* (1982), *Danton* (1983) and *Camille Claudel* (1988). He also directed three features: *Dandin* (1987), *Louis, enfant roi* (1993) and *Lautrec* (1998).
