## Fi1m on Roland Møller

> Roland Møller makes tough men credible, but too many parts stop there. We rate his physical authority; we are less persuaded by films that treat it as a substitute for giving him a character to play.

Roland Møller is often asked to be frightening: a criminal, a gangster, a military sergeant. He makes these hard men credible, though credibility alone cannot make them interesting. In *Mutiny* (2026), his Captain Marko Madsen functions well enough within the thriller, but the writing gives us little reason to care about him. Casting Møller can establish a threat; it should not finish the work of creating a person.

His debut in the Danish prison drama *R* (2010) was followed by *A Hijacking* (2012), directed by Tobias Lindholm, and *Northwest* (2013). His first leading role came as Sergeant Carl Rasmussen in *Land of Mine* (2015), a useful place to look for his ability to make a tough, damaged man believable. The appeal is more than size or aggression. His interest in characters who change or struggle with themselves offers something worth following beyond the next confrontation.

*Atomic Blonde* (2017) marked the move into international action work, where his physical force is an obvious asset. He continued to appear in Danish films, including *Riders of Justice* (2020), rather than making a clean departure. Yet the problem of being hired as the villain was familiar: he spent years turning down hooligan and gangster roles. We would rather see that persistence rewarded with a substantial part than have another film hire him simply to look dangerous.

*Mutiny* shows how easily a supporting actor can be given too little to work with, and Annabelle Wallis receives little more help than Møller from Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis's screenplay. We grew impatient because their conversations offered so little to hold us between the fights. Jean-François Richet still delivers a serviceable action thriller, and Møller does his assigned job without making the character a reason to see it. Start with *Land of Mine* rather than expecting Captain Madsen to settle the question.

## Biography

Roland Møller is a Danish actor. Born in Odense, he made his screen debut in the 2010 prison drama *R* after working as a consultant on the film.

He won the Bodil Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for *Land of Mine* (2015) and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for *Nordvest* (2013). Møller has appeared in international films including *Atomic Blonde* (2017), *Papillon* (2017), *Skyscraper* (2018), *The Commuter* (2018) and *Riders of Justice* (2020), and stars as Captain Marko Madsen in *Mutiny* (2026).
