## Biography

Romain Gary (born Roman Kacew) was a French novelist, screenwriter and film director. He also wrote under the pen name Émile Ajar and other pseudonyms.

Gary wrote the screenplay for the 1962 film *The Longest Day*. He is the only author to have won the Prix Goncourt twice, once under each of two names. His novels include *The Roots of Heaven* (1956) and *The Life Before Us* (1975, as Émile Ajar). Several of his works have been adapted for film, among them *Promise at Dawn* and *White Dog*.

Gary was born in Vilnius in 1914 and died in Paris in 1980.
