## Fi1m on Romola Garai

> Romola Garai makes authority convincing without fuss. We value the intelligence and directness she brings to period drama, though *One Life* is a reminder that a capable supporting performance cannot make an ordinary film much better.

In *One Life* (2023), Romola Garai’s Doreen Warriner runs the relief committee like a headmistress dealing with an emergency. There is work to be done, and she makes getting it done seem the natural response to distress. We warmed to her briskness because she makes organising help feel like a serious skill. Garai is persuasive here without making a great display of the character’s concern. Her firmness tells us enough, and suits a film in which helping children depends on getting the paperwork right.

Period drama has supplied much of her work, from an early lead as Cassandra Mortmain in *I Capture the Castle* (2003) to the eighteen-year-old Briony Tallis in *Atonement* (2007). *Emma* (2009) and *The Hour* (2011–2012) continued that association. What interests us is the simplicity she brings to complicated women, particularly in *Atonement*, where the performance does not advertise its effort. These are useful qualities in films and programmes about women living within social constraints. She can make their intelligence apparent without asking us to find them agreeable.

The limitation is clear in *One Life*: James Hawes’s plain telling of Nicholas Winton’s story leaves the historical scenes looking ordinary. Christina Moore’s camps, with their tents, mud and smoking stoves, give the actors a convincing setting. Garai’s practical authority is welcome, but it cannot make those scenes much less dutiful. She also plays Ms Jenkins in *Just Act Normal* (2025), which we recommend more warmly. Its young leads keep the family comedy-drama funny and painful without overplaying either, though six episodes can make a demanding evening.

Writing and directing the horror film *Amulet* (2020) was a change of responsibility as well as genre. It is a useful reason not to treat period drama as the limit of her interests. For her acting, start with *Atonement*, where the simplicity is worth watching closely.
