## Fi1m on Ron Dean

> Ron Dean made screen policemen sound accustomed to being obeyed. We value his spare, recognisably Chicago performances, especially in *The Fugitive*, though the repeated casting of him as cops and tough men set limits on the work.

Ron Dean often sounded as though the conversation had already gone on too long. As Detective Kelly in *The Fugitive* (1993), he gives the interrogation the weight of someone accustomed to being answered. We felt the pressure of that questioning because his no-nonsense delivery makes official suspicion hard to shrug off. This is the work we value in Dean: a small part played firmly enough to help a thriller establish its stakes.

His supporting work accumulated through the 1980s, including Andy’s father, Mr Clark, in *The Breakfast Club* (1985) and Uncle Pat in *Cocktail* (1988). Those parts sit beside the detectives and other authority figures for which he was repeatedly cast. The Chicago accent and working-class manner gave those roles a recognisable identity even when the dialogue was sparse.

Andrew Davis directed Dean in seven films, and *The Fugitive* is the clearest starting point for seeing why the association worked. Davis’s chase thriller finds room for worry, dry humour and brief exchanges as well as pursuit. Dennis Virkler and his fellow editors let a look or a clipped reply register before moving on, an approach that gives supporting actors a chance to count. Dean benefits from that patience; the questioning has time to become uncomfortable without him needing to force it.

The recurring role of Detective Marion Zeke Crumb in *Early Edition* (1996–2000) continued his run of Chicago policemen on television. By *The Dark Knight* (2008), as Detective Wuertz, he was again bringing a familiar sort of authority to a large cast. Christopher Nolan’s crime thriller gives Heath Ledger’s Joker the frightening urgency, while Dean’s contribution is smaller and less demonstrative. He makes the police presence credible beside the more conspicuous performances.

The reservation is that reliability can become hard to distinguish from repetition. Dean was repeatedly cast as cops and tough men, and those credits do not establish how much else he might have done. There is no need to pretend otherwise to appreciate what he contributes. Start with *The Fugitive*, and pay attention to how much pressure a supporting actor can apply simply by asking questions.
