## Fi1m on Ron Shelton

> Ron Shelton’s sports comedies make room for adult attraction and the foolishness of competitive people. We rate the warmth and the attention to life around the game, though he sometimes lets a clever line interrupt a good conversation.

In *Bull Durham* (1988), Robbins gives Nuke an eagerness that makes Kevin Costner’s self-possession more amusing. Their contrasting temperaments keep the romantic triangle lively, while Shelton makes the baseball worth watching between conversations. We laughed at Nuke’s foolishness because the performance never asks us to stop liking him. That is where we value Shelton most: he takes competitive people seriously while allowing them to make fools of themselves.

His experience as a minor-league baseball player helps explain the attention to life around the team. After co-writing *Under Fire* (1983), he made his directing debut with *Bull Durham*, and sport became his principal territory through the 1990s. The basketball hustlers of *White Men Can't Jump* (1992) and the golf romance of *Tin Cup* (1996), which reunited him with Costner, gave him different settings for competition and desire. The later turn to *Dark Blue* (2002), a Los Angeles police drama, and *Hollywood Homicide* (2003) took him away from sport.

*Bull Durham* also shows how much his direction depends on giving performers time. Editors Robert Leighton and Adam Weiss let attraction develop at a relaxed pace, and Michael Convertino’s music helps keep the mood easy. Susan Sarandon makes Annie persuasive even when Shelton gives her too many clever opinions, supplying feeling that the dialogue cannot provide by itself. The actors do most of the romantic work, and Shelton is usually content to let us watch them without hurrying to the next complication.

The relaxed pace becomes a problem when an exchange runs longer than it needs to. Shelton occasionally writes characters who seem to be enjoying the sound of their own intelligence, and the direction indulges them. Those passages need firmer cutting, but they do not cancel the pleasure of the performances. Start with *Bull Durham*; the baseball matters to the people in it, but knowing the rules is not a condition of enjoying their company.
