## Biography

Ross Devenish is a South African film and television director. Born on 15 November 1939, he studied film-making in London and began his career in the 1960s making documentaries.

He directed the eight-part BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens's *Bleak House* (1985), which won three BAFTA Television Awards. Devenish has also directed episodes of series including *Agatha Christie's Poirot* (1990–1992), *Between the Lines* (1994), *A Touch of Frost* and *The Bill*.

Earlier in his career he collaborated with playwright Athol Fugard on feature films such as *Boesman and Lena* (1973), *The Guest* (1977) and *Marigolds in August* (1980). He lives in Cape Town.
