The strange creatures in *Farscape* (1999) get our attention; the difficult relationships keep it. Rowan Woods directed multiple instalments, and the series offers a useful introduction to his interest in people who are not easy company. We grew fond of them because their increasingly involved relationships gave us reasons to stay through the early melodrama. The ageing effects remain an obstacle, but we recommend the programme for the time it takes to make its companions matter.

*The Boys* (1998), his feature debut, established his reputation for raw, character-focused drama. *Little Fish* (2005), with Cate Blanchett, brought that attention to an ensemble story about addiction and family. Woods directed the feature films *The Boys* (1998), for which he won an AFI Award for Best Direction, and *Little Fish* (2005). He has also directed episodes of television series including *Farscape* (1999), *Spartacus* (2010), *The Kettering Incident* (2016) and *Nowhere Boys* (2013).

Since 2021 he has served as president of the Australian Directors' Guild.
