He studied industrial management technology and business administration at Farmingdale State College before earning an MFA in acting from Harvard University, which included a residency at the Moscow Art Theater School in Russia.

Kota began appearing in television and film in the early 2010s. He is known for recurring roles as Dr Vik Roy in *Grey's Anatomy* (2017) and Prashant in *Never Have I Ever* (2020–2022).
