## Biography

Russ Brown was an American actor of stage, film and television. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he began his career on Broadway in the 1920s and appeared in early sound films including *Moulin Rouge* (1934).

He is best known for his Tony Award-winning performance as Benny Van Buren in the 1955 Broadway musical *Damn Yankees*, which he reprised in the 1958 film adaptation. Other notable film roles include Captain Brackett in *South Pacific* (1958), George Lemon in *Anatomy of a Murder* (1959), Uncle Otis in *It Happened to Jane* (1959), the night watchman in *Advise & Consent* (1962) and Dr Heller in *The Cardinal* (1963). He also had a recurring television role in *The Law and Mr. Jones* (1960–1962). Brown died in Englewood, New Jersey, in 1964.
