In *Endeavour* (2013), the young Morse is clever and impatient, but Lewis allows him to get things wrong. That gives the prequel a purpose: the familiar detective still has something to learn. We rate Lewis most highly for making that learning worth watching, with a working relationship strong enough to carry us through the less surprising investigations. The cases can feel familiar, and the unhurried pace occasionally leaves us waiting too long for the next deduction.

Writing for *Between the Lines* (1992) and *Inspector Morse* (1995) meant working within established police dramas. *Lewis* (2007) continued his involvement with Morse’s world, before *Endeavour* gave him responsibility for a detective’s development across an entire series. He devised it and wrote the pilot and every episode, sustaining its character development and a consistent style over successive series. That consistency matters in a patient drama, where a small change in a character can justify spending another evening on a familiar kind of investigation.

His scripts favour intricate plotting, period detail and cultural references, though we do not need to spot every reference to follow the people. We warmed to Shaun Evans’s awkward Morse because Roger Allam’s mentor treats him with care. The writing leaves room for that relationship to matter alongside the investigation, and the actors reward the attention. Our preference for their scenes is also a reservation about the mysteries: Lewis’s detailed construction does not always stop a case feeling over-familiar.

With *Grace* (2021), Lewis adapted Peter James’s novels and wrote the first two series. That continues his habit of extending established crime fiction, a form in which character can too easily become something the audience is simply expected to recognise. Our test is whether the people remain worth following when the mechanics of detection become routine. We would start with *Endeavour*, and give Evans and Allam time to settle in.

Russell Lewis (born 11 September 1963) is an English television writer and former actor. Born in London, he began his career as a child actor before moving into writing in the mid-1980s.

His writing credits include episodes of *Between the Lines* (1992), for which he shared a Writers' Guild of Great Britain award, *Spooks* (2002), *Inspector Morse*, *Lewis*, and several *Sharpe* films. He created and wrote all 36 episodes of the *Inspector Morse* prequel *Endeavour* (2012–2023), and created and wrote the first two series of *Grace* (2021–2022). He has also contributed to *Agatha Christie's Marple* and *Hornblower*.
