## Biography

Russell Metty (also credited as Russell L. Metty) was an American cinematographer. He began his career in the mid-1920s as a laboratory assistant and later worked as a camera operator at Paramount and RKO before becoming a director of photography. His early credits include *Bringing Up Baby* (1938).

Metty shot more than 170 films and television productions between the 1930s and 1970s. He is noted for his work with Orson Welles on *The Stranger* (1946) and *Touch of Evil* (1958), and for a long collaboration with Douglas Sirk that encompassed eleven films, among them *All That Heaven Allows* (1955), *Written on the Wind* (1956) and *Imitation of Life* (1959). He won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, Colour, for *Spartacus* (1960) and received a further nomination for *Flower Drum Song* (1961). Other notable credits include *The Misfits* (1961), *That Touch of Mink* (1962) and *The Omega Man* (1971).
