## Fi1m on Ruth McCabe

> Ruth McCabe is worth watching for the life she gives a household around its leading man. Her Kay Curley in *The Snapper* has concerns of her own; we wish the film examined them more closely.

In the family scenes of *The Snapper* (1993), Ruth McCabe's Kay Curley has concerns that do not disappear just because Colm Meaney's Dessie is getting the attention. Tina Kellegher's Sharon has them too, and together they keep the household from becoming a collection of people waiting for the father to speak. We enjoyed their company because there was someone worth watching beyond the leading man. McCabe helps make these scenes pleasurable without requiring the story to stop and explain why the family matters.

McCabe's career has moved from Irish television towards international films while remaining largely in supporting parts. Kay McCoy in *Fair City* (1989–1992) and Mary in *My Left Foot* (1989) were early roles. Later came Ma Braden in Neil Jordan's *Breakfast on Pluto* (2005), then *Philomena* (2013) and *Victoria & Abdul* (2017). Mothers and community figures recur in her casting, but a familiar place in a household need not produce a routine performance. What we value in *The Snapper* is the sense that Kay has other things to think about.

Stephen Frears, a recurring collaborator, gets good work from her in *The Snapper*, helped by Roddy Doyle's writing. The reservation is with the film's generosity, which makes the family easy to like and sometimes too easy to excuse. Meaney's prominence brings warmth, but it also exposes how much more readily the film understands Dessie than it examines what is expected of its women. McCabe and Kellegher make that imbalance noticeable because they have given us reasons to be interested in Kay and Sharon.

Mary Murphy in *That They May Face the Rising Sun* (2023) extends that long run of screen work. We would welcome more parts that give her character the kind of attention Dessie receives, rather than asking her to help make his surroundings convincing. For a first encounter, choose *The Snapper*: there is considerable pleasure in the company, even if the father gets rather too much indulgence.
