## Fi1m on Ryan Gosling

> Ryan Gosling is at his most interesting when confidence gives way to embarrassment. We rate him for the small reactions that make foolish men worth caring about, and the restraint that keeps troubled characters from becoming appeals for pity.

In *Barbie* (2023), watch Ryan Gosling's face when Barbie fails to notice Ken. The disappointment is funny because he gives it time to hurt, without asking us to stop laughing. Greta Gerwig gets a performance that stays sincere even when the character has scarcely a thought to offer. We like this Gosling: capable of looking ridiculous without treating the man he plays as beneath him.

*The Notebook* (2004) established him as a romantic lead, but *Half Nelson* (2006) is where we would send anyone inclined to dismiss him as one. As teacher Dan Dunne, he refuses to turn each scene into a demonstration of what is wrong with the man. Ryan Fleck and co-writer Anna Boden leave the friendship with his pupil difficult even when both mean well. We felt uneasy about liking Dan, because Gosling makes him good company without asking us to excuse him. Shareeka Epps gives him someone worth listening to, and their performances sustain the film when the writing thins.

*Drive* (2011) helped fix his image as a man of few words; *La La Land* (2016) gave him singing and dancing alongside the romance. Ken draws more openly on his deadpan comic timing. The danger is that a recognisable wounded look can become a routine.

In David Leitch's *The Fall Guy* (2024), Emily Blunt gives him someone to react to. His Colt Seavers offers a thumbs up when he cannot find anything honest to say, a small piece of avoidance that Drew Pearce's script knows how to use. When Blunt's Jody lets her anger slip, Gosling notices without making a show of it, and their scenes of repeated takes are worth more than the mystery surrounding them. Jonathan Sela's wide framing also lets the stunt work register as bodies taking risks. The film is too long, and Gosling's company cannot make the mystery worth the extra time.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller put his bafflement to work in *Project Hail Mary* (2026), where Gosling's Ryland Grace talks himself through his fear. Drew Goddard gives him thinking to do on camera, and the shifts from confusion to modest satisfaction are a pleasure in themselves. The flashbacks still make the film half an hour too long. Make time for *Half Nelson* before deciding that awkward charm is all he does.
