## Biography

Ryo Kase is a Japanese actor. He was born on 9 November 1974 in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, and spent his early childhood in Bellevue, Washington, until the age of seven. He made his screen debut in 2000 in Sogo Ishii's *Gojoe: Spirit War Chronicle*.

Kase is known for his role as Superior Private Shimizu in Clint Eastwood's *Letters from Iwo Jima* (2006). He starred as the lead in Masayuki Suo's *I Just Didn't Do It* (2007) and has appeared in films including Hirokazu Koreeda's *Nobody Knows* (2004) and *Our Little Sister* (2015), Takeshi Kitano's *Outrage* (2010) and *Beyond Outrage* (2012), Gus Van Sant's *Restless* (2011), Abbas Kiarostami's *Like Someone in Love* (2012), Martin Scorsese's *Silence* (2016), and Andrew Levitas's *Minamata* (2020).

For his performance in *I Just Didn't Do It*, Kase received the Japan Academy Prize for Best Actor and other domestic awards.
