> Ryu Seung-ryong plays fathers, ministers and squad chiefs, authority figures whose stake in the outcome drives the story. In *Kingdom* he never raises his voice, treats a plague as paperwork, and gives us a villain better written than the hero.

In *Kingdom* (2019), Cho Hak-ju hears that the dead are getting up and eating the living, and his first thought is how the news can be turned to advantage. Ryu Seung-ryong never raises his voice in the part. He treats the plague as paperwork, and the script is fair enough to let him be right about the prince's inexperience while wrong about everything else. It is the kind of villain we find far more frightening than a shouting one, and it shows his method plainly: keep the voice low and level, and let the audience do the worrying.

He came to it late. Trained in theatre at the Seoul Institute of the Arts, he did not make a film until *Someone Special* (2004), aged 34, and then spent more than a decade in supporting parts before *War of the Arrows* (2011), as Jyu Shin-ta, got him noticed. The hits came quickly after that: *Masquerade* (2012), *Miracle in Cell No. 7* (2013), *The Admiral: Roaring Currents* (2014). Then a quieter stretch, until *Extreme Job* (2019), *Kingdom* and *Moving* (2023) put him back in the middle of things, and he has lately been leading television, most recently *The Dream Life of Mr. Kim* (2025).

The through-line is authority. He plays fathers, ministers, commanders and squad chiefs, men whose stake in the outcome drives the story whether they are protecting someone or wrecking them. He will change his shape for a part, a period official's bearing, a Qing commander speaking Manchu, and in ensemble comedies such as *Extreme Job* he keeps something serious underneath the jokes, so there is a man inside the routine. He has thought about these men. Of Cho Hak-ju he said the character "does not only possess greed, but has the false belief that his greed is justified by a greater cause", which is exactly what is on screen: a minister who thinks he is saving the country.

Where he goes wrong, by most accounts, is in the tearjerkers. *Miracle in Cell No. 7* made him a leading man and also earned the complaint that the emotion tips into caricature; asked to weep, he can oversupply. We have not reviewed it and will not judge it at length. What we can say is that in *Kingdom* the opposite happens, and it is why we trust him: when Cho Hak-ju calmly files a catastrophe under opportunity, we felt a small cold drop in the stomach, and the effect came entirely from what he declined to do. Kim Eun-hee's writing gives him room, and Kim Hye-jun, as his daughter, is stiller and more alarming yet.

Start with *Kingdom*, where he has the best material, and go on to *Extreme Job* if you want the same steadiness turned to comedy. Approach the family melodramas knowing what you are in for. He is at his best when the part lets him keep his voice down. If you have one evening, give it to Cho Hak-ju.

## Biography

Ryu Seung-ryong is a South Korean actor born on 29 November 1970. He trained in theatre at the Seoul Institute of the Arts and began his career on stage, including a long international run performing in the non-verbal show Nanta.

He made his film debut in 2004 and became known for roles in *Miracle in Cell No. 7* (2013), *The Admiral: Roaring Currents* (2014), *Extreme Job* (2019) and *20th Century Girl* (2022). On television he has appeared in *Personal Taste* (2010), *Kingdom* (2019–2020) as Cho Hak-ju, and *Moving* (2023). He won the Grand Prize for film at the 49th Baeksang Arts Awards for *Miracle in Cell No. 7*. Ryu is an adjunct professor in the department of acting arts at Seoul Arts College.
