## Biography

Ryūzō Kikushima was a Japanese screenwriter and film producer. He co-wrote the screenplay for Akira Kurosawa's *Yojimbo* (1961) and both wrote and produced *High and Low* (1963).

Kikushima produced several other Kurosawa films in the early 1960s and contributed screenplays to additional Kurosawa works including *Throne of Blood* (1957), *The Hidden Fortress* (1958) and *Sanjuro* (1962). He also wrote or co-wrote screenplays for films by other directors, such as Mikio Naruse's *When a Woman Ascends the Stairs* (1960), on which he served as producer, and *Tora! Tora! Tora!* (1970).

In 2013, Kikushima and his frequent screenwriting collaborators Akira Kurosawa, Shinobu Hashimoto and Hideo Oguni received the Jean Renoir Award from the Writers Guild of America West.
