S. E. Hinton, also credited as Susan Eloise Hinton, is an American writer. She was born on 22 July 1948 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and graduated from the University of Tulsa. She is the author of several young adult novels set in Oklahoma, including *The Outsiders* (1967), *Rumble Fish* (1975) and *Tex* (1979).

Hinton wrote the novel on which the 1983 film *Rumble Fish* is based and co-wrote its screenplay with Francis Ford Coppola. In 1988 she received the inaugural Margaret A. Edwards Award from the American Library Association for her contribution to literature for young adults.
