## Biography

S.J. Perelman was an American humorist and screenwriter. Born Sidney Joseph Perelman in Brooklyn, New York, on 1 February 1904, he died in New York on 17 October 1979. He attended Brown University, where he edited the humour magazine, but did not graduate.

Perelman wrote screenplays for the Marx Brothers films *Monkey Business* (1931) and *Horse Feathers* (1932). He contributed humorous pieces regularly to *The New Yorker* over several decades. He shared an Academy Award for best screenplay for *Around the World in 80 Days* (1956). He also collaborated on stage works including *One Touch of Venus* (1943).
