## Biography

S. N. Behrman (Samuel Nathaniel Behrman) was an American playwright and screenwriter. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, he studied at Harvard University and Columbia University before establishing himself as a writer for magazines including The New Yorker.

Behrman was a leading author of Broadway high comedies from the late 1920s to the 1940s, with works often produced by the Theatre Guild. In Hollywood he wrote or contributed to screenplays including *Queen Christina* (1934), *Anna Karenina* (1935), *A Tale of Two Cities* (1935) and *Waterloo Bridge* (1940). He also wrote biographies and memoirs.

Behrman died in New York City in 1973. He was married to Elza Heifetz Behrman and was the father of composer David Behrman.
