## Biography

Sacha Vierny (10 August 1919 – 15 May 2001) was a French cinematographer. Born in Bois-le-Roi, Seine-et-Marne, he trained at the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques (IDHEC) in Paris.

He first collaborated with Alain Resnais as assistant cameraman on the 1955 documentary *Night and Fog*, and subsequently shot ten films with the director from 1955 to 1984, including *Hiroshima Mon Amour* (1959) and *Last Year at Marienbad* (1961). From 1985 he served as cinematographer on nearly all of Peter Greenaway’s projects, among them *A Zed & Two Noughts* (1985), *The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover* (1989) and *Prospero’s Books* (1991). Vierny also worked with directors including Luis Buñuel on *Belle de Jour* (1967), Raoul Ruiz and Chris Marker.
