## Biography

Sachio Sakai (堺 左千夫), born Yukio Abe (阿部 幸男) on 8 September 1925 in Tokyo, was a Japanese actor. He graduated from Tokyo City Asakusa Technical College and entered Toho's first New Face actors' training programme in 1946. His film debut came in 1947 in Akira Kurosawa's *One Wonderful Sunday*.

Sakai appeared in numerous Toho productions, often in supporting roles. He worked frequently with directors including Kurosawa, Ishirō Honda and Kihachi Okamoto. Notable credits include *Godzilla* (1954) as the newspaper reporter Hagiwara, *Seven Samurai* (1954) as a coolie, *Throne of Blood* (1957), *The Hidden Fortress* (1958), *Yojimbo* (1961) and *King Kong vs. Godzilla* (1962). He remained active until the mid-1990s and died on 11 March 1998.
