## Fi1m on Sadie Sink

> Sadie Sink is nearly always the angriest person at the table, and she plays the anger as if it were the only sensible response. The force is real. What she has lacked, on screen at least, is a script that gives it somewhere to go.

Sadie Sink's people arrive already cross. Max Mayfield in *Stranger Things*, Ellie in *The Whale*: guarded girls who expect to be let down and usually are. The usual way to play that is as a front, with the softness leaking out from underneath. Sink does something less comfortable. She plays the hostility as a reasonable position, held steadily, and lets the hurt show only in the gaps when nobody on screen is looking at her. She has said of Jean Grey that "in her brain it’s totally justified", and that is how she plays all of them.

She came up on stage, and it shows. Broadway at ten in the 2012 revival of *Annie*, then the young Elizabeth II opposite Helen Mirren in *The Audience* (2015): parts that ask a child to hold a scene with adults rather than be sweet in one. Television found her in *Stranger Things* from the second run in 2017. We thought her good, and thought the Duffers had by then hired too many people for anyone new to get the minutes she deserved. In 2021 came Leigh Janiak's *Fear Street* films, in which she did her own stunts, and Taylor Swift's *All Too Well: The Short Film*. We have not reviewed either, but between them they got her out of the basement.

*The Whale* (2022) was meant to be the proof, and it half was. Darren Aronofsky has made a filmed play in which everybody states a position and shouts it, and Hunter's script writes Ellie as a monster whose cruelty the film keeps calling honesty. Sink plays exactly what is on the page, with complete conviction, and has nowhere else to go. We flinched the first time she told Brendan Fraser's Charlie he was disgusting. By the third speech we had stopped flinching, and that is not her failure; it is what happens when a writer gives an actor one setting and asks her to hold it for the length of a film. Fraser, meanwhile, was handed kindness, which is the one idea the film has.

*Spider-Man: Brand New Day* (2026) reunited her with Destin Daniel Cretton, who had directed her in *The Glass Castle*, and gave her Jean Grey. For an hour it is the loneliest and most grown-up of Holland's Spider-Man films. Then the guest stars arrive, and Sink, like Florence Pugh, passes through. More X-Men are scheduled. She has meanwhile gone back to the stage, to Broadway in *John Proctor Is the Villain* (2025) and to the West End as Juliet in 2026, and the pattern is hard to miss. The theatre keeps handing her a whole evening; the screen has so far handed her a mood and one scene to hit it in. The X-Men will not fix that. Somebody with a small film and a good script might.
