## Fi1m on Sally Phillips

> Sally Phillips plays the woman who has noticed the joke before anyone else and sees no reason to hide it. Behind a reception desk, in a sketch show she wrote herself, in a decade of sitcoms, the timing has rarely let her down.

Alan Partridge comes up to the reception desk of his hotel outside Norwich and Sophie, behind it, laughs at him. Not behind her hand and not once he has gone: openly, while he is still talking. Sally Phillips plays it without a trace of malice, and that is what makes it work. Sophie is not cruel. She has simply noticed that the man is absurd and sees no reason to pretend otherwise. We laughed with her every time in *I'm Alan Partridge* (1997), and winced for him a little more each time, and the series knew exactly how much of each to allow.

That is the Phillips method: let the pause do the work, and trust the audience to see what the character has seen. She trained as a clown with Philippe Gaulier after the Oxford Revue, and the patience shows. Sketches on *Fist of Fun* (1994–95) came first; then Sophie; then *Smack the Pony* (1999–2003), which she co-created, wrote and performed with Doon Mackichan and Fiona Allen. "We developed rules: no celebrity references, no recurring characters, no catchphrases," she said of it, and what filled the gap was wigs, pratfalls, absurd props and ordinary situations pushed one step further than sense allows. It is still the fullest picture of what she does when she is writing as well as performing.

The type she has been handed ever since is the well-spoken woman who is not quite listening: Tilly in *Miranda* (2009–15), all catchphrase and confidence; Minna Häkkinen, the Finnish prime minister who kept turning up in *Veep* (2012–19) to be politely baffling; Shazza, Bridget's blunt friend in *Bridget Jones's Diary* (2001) and the three films after it. She does these parts well, and they do not ask much of her. Our review of *Bridget Jones's Diary* found plenty to enjoy and did not find room to mention her, which is fair to the film and a little hard on the actor. Shazza exists to say the thing Bridget will not, and the script needs her only for that.

Phillips has said she wanted to play Juliet and that people did not take her seriously, and the record largely agrees: from *Jam & Jerusalem* (2006–09) to fifteen years of *Clare in the Community* (2004–19) on the radio, it is comedy almost all the way down. We do not think that is the loss she thinks it is. Sophie's laugh is a serious piece of acting, judged to the second and repeated without ever going stale. If you have not seen the first series of *I'm Alan Partridge*, start there and watch the reception desk. Anyone casting a straight drama could do worse than watch it too.
