## Fi1m on Sam Worthington

> Sam Worthington makes physical effort convincing and is useful when a film needs a credible officer. We like him best with a defined job to do; the franchise leads too often leave him repeating what his character cares about.

Jake Sully says family so often in *Avatar: Fire and Ash* (2025) that there is little chance of mistaking his priorities. Sam Worthington gives James Cameron the physical commitment these films demand, but the dialogue leaves him little else to do. We felt we had seen this film before, because the threats, escapes and battles keep returning in much the same order. The script, by Cameron, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, makes Jake announce his feelings instead of giving Worthington much opportunity to complicate them. His directness suits the danger; it does less for the repeated declarations.

The change of scale came with *Avatar* (2009), after Australian independent films including *Somersault* (2004). Playing Jake Sully made him internationally prominent, and that phase also included the action leads of *Terminator Salvation* (2009) and *Clash of the Titans* (2010). The risk was a capable hero with little to distinguish him. His move towards supporting parts from the mid-2010s gave that same strength a more useful place.

In Mel Gibson's *Hacksaw Ridge* (2016), Captain Glover gives that authority a clear use. Worthington is effective in the supporting military role, while Andrew Garfield carries the film as a persuasive conscientious objector. Worthington need not supply every reason for us to care about the story. This is the sort of casting we would like to see more often.

Kevin Costner's *Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1* (2024) shows how easily that usefulness can be wasted. Worthington's cavalry officer, Trent Gephart, begins a courtship with Frances that the script forgets for forty minutes at a time. There is room for something beyond the familiar soldier, but Costner keeps moving on before it can develop. The actor needs scenes that stay with him long enough for the relationship to matter. Start with *Hacksaw Ridge* instead, with the caveat that Gibson's relish for combat complicates its respect for a man who refuses to kill.

## Biography

Sam Worthington is an actor. Born Samuel Henry John Worthington on 2 August 1976 in Godalming, Surrey, England, he moved with his family to Perth, Western Australia, at six months old. He trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney.

Worthington first gained recognition in Australian cinema for roles in *Bootmen* (2000) and *Somersault* (2004), the latter earning him an AFI Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. He achieved international prominence as Jake Sully in James Cameron's *Avatar* (2009) and its sequels, including *Avatar: The Way of Water* (2022) and *Avatar: Fire and Ash* (2025). Other credits include *Terminator Salvation* (2009), *Clash of the Titans* (2010), *Everest* (2015), *Hacksaw Ridge* (2016) and *Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1* (2024), in which he played Trent Gephart.
