Samm-Art Williams was an American playwright, screenwriter, television producer and actor. Born Samuel Arthur Williams on 20 January 1946 in Burgaw, North Carolina, he moved to New York in 1973 and began working with the Negro Ensemble Company.

He wrote the play *Home* (1979), which transferred to Broadway in 1980 and earned him Tony Award and Drama Desk Award nominations. Williams acted in films including *The Wanderers* (1979), *Dressed to Kill* (1980), *Blood Simple* (1984) and *A Rage in Harlem* (1991), and appeared in television series such as *Miami Vice* and *The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air*. He served as an executive producer on *The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air* and received Emmy nominations for his television work.
