## Biography

Samuel A. Peeples (1917–1997) was an American writer of novels and television scripts. He began his career publishing Western novels, several under the pen name Brad Ward, before moving into television writing in the late 1950s.

Peeples created the Western series *The Tall Man* (1960), *Frontier Circus* (1961) and *Lancer* (1968), and co-created *Custer* (1967). A science-fiction enthusiast, he advised Gene Roddenberry during the development of *Star Trek* and wrote the second pilot episode, 'Where No Man Has Gone Before' (1966), which helped sell the series. He later contributed the first aired episode of *Star Trek: The Animated Series*, 'Beyond the Farthest Star' (1973), and worked with Roddenberry on the 1977 television film *Spectre*.
