## Biography

Samuel G. Engel was an American screenwriter and film producer. Born in Woodridge, New York, he earned a degree in pharmacology from the Albany College of Pharmacy in 1924 and owned a chain of drug stores in Manhattan with his brother before moving to Los Angeles in 1930.

He began working in film as an assistant director at Warner Bros. in 1933, joined the script department the following year, and became a producer at 20th Century Fox in 1936. After serving with the OSS and US Navy during the Second World War, he continued at the studio until 1962 and worked as an independent producer until 1966. His credits include producing and co-writing the screenplay for *My Darling Clementine* (1946), and producing *Night and the City* (1950), *Sitting Pretty* (1948), *Rawhide* (1951), *Daddy Long Legs* (1955) and *The Story of Ruth* (1960).

Engel served as president of the Screen Producers Guild from 1955 to 1958 and helped merge it with the television producers' guild to form the Producers Guild of America. He was also involved in televising the Academy Awards ceremonies.
