## Fi1m on Samuel L. Jackson

> Samuel L. Jackson makes talk funny and dangerous by letting his characters sound entirely reasonable, even when the conversation concerns guns, prison and who can be trusted.

In *Pulp Fiction* (1994), Samuel L. Jackson's Jules brings a preacher's conviction to an argument about a foot massage. John Travolta lets Vincent sound comfortably slack; Jackson gives every distinction weight, as though getting this straight matters to the work ahead. We laughed at their dispute, then went quiet when they knocked on the door and reminded us what that work was. Jackson is excellent at making dangerous men enjoyable company without letting us feel safe with them.

His early work included collaborations with Spike Lee and a breakthrough as Gator in *Jungle Fever* (1991); *Pulp Fiction* brought international recognition. Quentin Tarantino is the director we return to for Jackson's most rewarding work. In *Jackie Brown* (1997), Ordell Robbie explains guns and loyalty with the patience of someone who assumes that understanding him will mean agreeing with him. Jackson makes this funny and frightening: Ordell sounds reasonable even when we know better than to trust him. The film's leisurely middle needs tightening, but his conversations deserve the time.

In *Django Unchained* (2012), his Stephen shuffles and cackles while missing nothing, making the apparent fool the person we watch most carefully. As Major Marquis Warren in *The Hateful Eight* (2015), he uses grave courtesy to behave as though the cabin already belongs to him. Tarantino lets both films run too long.

His move into action leads and franchises included Nick Fury in *Iron Man* (2008). In Matthew Vaughn's *Argylle* (2024), he arrives when the plot needs him and disappears when it does not. His presence cannot make its succession of reveals worth following.

*The Piano Lesson* (2024) offers a better use of him. Under Malcolm Washington's direction, his peacekeeping uncle Doaker Charles tells the piano's history in a kitchen plainly, without pushing for a reaction. Nothing in the delivery asks us to notice how restrained he is, and the scene gains from it. It is worth tolerating the slow middle hour for that kitchen scene.

## Biography

Samuel L. Jackson is an American actor, also credited as Samuel Leroy Jackson. Born on 21 December 1948 in Washington, D.C., he began his professional career on stage. He originated the role of Boy Willie in August Wilson's *The Piano Lesson* at the Yale Repertory Theatre in 1987 and played Doaker Charles in the 2022 Broadway revival.

Jackson's early film work includes roles in several Spike Lee films such as *Do the Right Thing* (1989) and *Jungle Fever* (1991). He achieved wider recognition for his performance as Jules Winnfield in Quentin Tarantino's *Pulp Fiction* (1994), earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Subsequent credits include *Jackie Brown* (1997), *Django Unchained* (2012), *The Hateful Eight* (2015), *The Marvels* (2023) as Nick Fury, *Argylle* (2024) as Alfie, and *The Piano Lesson* (2024) as Doaker Charles.

In 2022, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented him with an Honorary Award.
