## Biography

Samuel Matlovsky (27 October 1921 – 17 February 2004) was an American composer, conductor and musical director. Born in the Panama Canal Zone, he studied at the Paris Conservatory before serving in the US Navy during the Second World War. He later worked in New York as a conductor and pianist on Broadway productions including *Porgy and Bess*, *The Threepenny Opera* and *Mother Courage and Her Children*.

In the 1960s he moved to California and composed for film and television. His credits include music for the series *Flipper* (1964–1967) and the *Star Trek* episode 'I, Mudd' (1967). He also worked as an orchestrator on *Spartacus* (1960) and received Gemini Award nominations for his score for *Philip Marlowe, Private Eye* (1986). Matlovsky died in Haverhill, Massachusetts.
