An awkward conversation in *North & South* (2004) is allowed to stay awkward. Sandy Welch gives Margaret Hale and John Thornton distinct opinions, and does not immediately supply a charming remark to make their differences disappear. There is a reason to listen to what these people say, rather than simply wait for them to stop disagreeing.

We found ourselves caring about the romance because their disagreements had been taken seriously; affection would have to mean more than overlooking an inconvenient opinion. That is a useful discipline for a writer adapting familiar literary material, where recognition can too easily be mistaken for interest.

The reservation is pace. There are stretches of *North & South* where the waiting becomes wearisome, and sharp dialogue cannot quite excuse the drag. We would not send someone who dislikes patient romantic drama to it in the hope of converting them. Even so, Welch gives those willing to stay enough substance in the conversations to make the slower passages worth accepting. Set aside an evening for *North & South*, but do not expect it to hurry.

Sandy Welch is a British television writer and screenwriter. She was born on 6 December 1953 in Chester, Cheshire, England, and trained at the National Film and Television School. She has worked primarily on BBC productions since the early 1980s.

Welch is known for her adaptations of classic literature, including *Our Mutual Friend* (1998), *North & South* (2004), for which she wrote the screenplay and served as creator, *Jane Eyre* (2006) and *Emma* (2009). She won a BAFTA Television Award for Best Drama Serial for *Our Mutual Friend* in 1999 and received an Emmy nomination for her work on *Jane Eyre*.
