> Sara Giraudeau plays clever women who are not yet as good as the job needs them to be, and lets us watch them learn. Over five seasons of *The Bureau* that made Marina Loiseau the person on screen we worried about most.

The scene that tells you what Sara Giraudeau is for comes early in *The Bureau*. Marina Loiseau, a recruit being built a false life as a seismologist for a posting in Iran, is put through a mock interrogation. A man asks her the same question in a different order until she cannot remember which answer was hers. Giraudeau plays her as small, quick and not yet good at this, and that last part is the point. Most actors playing spies arrive finished. She arrives unfinished, and lets us watch the finishing.

The series ran from 2015 to 2020, five seasons under Éric Rochant, and Marina is in it for the length. Before that there had been theatre from 2005, a handful of small film parts and a mainstream credit as Clotilde in *Beauty and the Beast* (2014). Afterwards came the films: *Bloody Milk* (2017) for Hubert Charuel, in which she plays Pascale, the vet sister; *The Speech* (2020), as Sonia; *Farewell, Mr. Haffmann* (2021), as Blanche Mercier. We have not reviewed those and will not pretend to, except to say that *Bloody Milk* is the performance other critics cite most, and for the quality we saw in Marina: a supporting part that holds the film steady around it. She has also begun directing and co-directing for the stage.

What she has is a voice you notice, and a habit of doing less than the scene invites. In a genre built on people who know exactly what they are doing, she plays a woman working it out, and the effect over fifty hours is that Marina's competence, when it arrives, feels earned. The mock interrogation frightened us more than any chase we can remember, and it is Giraudeau who does it: she does not fight her interrogator, she simply runs out of certainty in front of us, and we knew that in Iran there would be no rehearsal. She has said she likes series because "on suit vraiment un personnage sur sa longueur", you follow a character across the whole distance, and that is exactly how she uses the form.

The reservation is the obvious one. She has been cast, again and again, as the intelligent, resilient woman in the supporting or ensemble part, vulnerable on the surface with something harder underneath, and she is good at it, but nobody has yet made her the centre of a film. The series that made her name kept Mathieu Kassovitz at its centre. When the last stretch of the final season loses its footing, it is not her doing; when the middle years hold, she is a large part of why.

If you have not seen *The Bureau*, start at the beginning and wait for the interrogation. If you have, you already know the face she makes when she realises she has lost.

## Biography

Sara Giraudeau is a French actress. She was born on 1 August 1985 in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, and is the daughter of actors Anny Duperey and Bernard Giraudeau. She made her screen debut at the age of ten in her father's film *Les caprices d'un fleuve* (1996).

Giraudeau trained at the Jean Périmony drama school in Paris. She began her stage career with appearances in *The Vagina Monologues* and received the Molière Award for Best Female Newcomer in 2007 for *La Valse des pingouins*. She has won further Molière Awards, including for Best Actress in 2023 for *Le Syndrome de l'oiseau*.

On screen, she is known for her role as Marina Loiseau in the Canal+ series *The Bureau* (2015–2020). Her film credits include *Beauty and the Beast* (2014), *Petit Paysan* (2017, for which she won the César Award for Best Supporting Actress), *The Translators* (2019), *The Speech* (2020), *Farewell, Mr. Haffmann* (2022) and *Jim's Story* (2024). She lives with actor Simon Hubert.
