## Fi1m on Saskia Reeves

> Saskia Reeves plays the woman who keeps the office running and is not thanked for it, and she has done it with the same quiet exactness for thirty years. *Slow Horses* finally gave her a part big enough for people to notice.

Watch Catherine Standish in *Slow Horses* (2022–) for an episode and you will notice that she does very little. She keeps the files. She keeps her dignity, which around Gary Oldman's Jackson Lamb is the harder task. She has a way of standing slightly to one side of a scene as if she has already heard the conversation and is waiting for it to finish. Reeves gives Standish dignity without giving her any pride, and the series would be coarser without her in it.

She came to the screen late and from the stage, which shows. After Guildhall, and before that puppet shows and satirical revues, she worked with Cheek by Jowl, the RSC and the National Theatre from the mid-1980s. Film arrived in 1990 and 1991 with *Antonia and Jane* and *Close My Eyes*, where she played Natalie, and then came decades of steady work in all three media: Lady Jessica Atreides in the miniseries *Frank Herbert's Dune* (2000), Rose Teller in the first series of *Luther* (2010). None of it made her a name. Most of it made her useful, which in this profession is the rarer thing.

In *Luther* we said she got the thankless job of asking for evidence, and that is her lot in most things: the sensible person, the boss, the mother, the one who says what everyone else is avoiding. What separates her from the dozen actors who get those parts is that she never plays them as furniture. Standish is a recovering alcoholic, and Reeves lets that sit under the tidiness without once underlining it; you feel the effort the neatness costs. In *The Outrun* (2024) her Annie, mother to Saoirse Ronan's Rona, is on screen for a fraction of the running time, and we were steadier whenever she was. The script gives her patience rather than lines, and Reeves makes the patience feel like love that has been tested and has stayed. It moved us more than a part that small has any business doing.

The limit is the parts, not the actor. She has rarely been handed the middle of a story, and we cannot tell you what she does with one because we have not seen it. She has said that it is important, as you get older, to put yourself slightly outside your comfort zone as often as possible. On the evidence, her comfort zone is other people's chaos, and she is the calmest thing in it. If *Slow Horses* ever gives Standish an hour of her own, we will be watching.
