Born in Sens, Yonne, he died in Montgeron, Essonne. He trained at the Paris Conservatoire, where he won a first prize, and performed on stage in dramas, boulevard comedies and operettas. Fabre appeared in silent films from 1911 and made the transition to sound cinema with *La route est belle* (1930). He is credited as The Great Father in *Pépé le Moko* (1937) and played Monsieur Sénéchal in *Gates of the Night* (1946). He appeared in nearly 80 talking films, mostly comedies, under many directors. In 1948 he published an autobiography, *Douche écossaise*, under the anagram Ninrutas Erbaf.
