He grew up in Illinois and trained in improvisational comedy at Chicago's Second City and ImprovOlympic under Del Close, later performing with the Upright Citizens Brigade. He began his film career in collaboration with director Todd Phillips, co-writing *Road Trip* (2000) and providing story and screenplay for *Old School* (2003). Their work together continued on *Starsky & Hutch* (2004), *School for Scoundrels* (2006) and *The Hangover Part II* (2011). Armstrong also wrote *The Heartbreak Kid* (2007) and *Semi-Pro* (2008).
