In *Room* and in television from *Deadwood* to *Rectify* he plays ordinary Southern men with a stillness that reads as decency or as threat, and he does not signal which. Nobody in a Sean Bridgers scene is looking at Sean Bridgers, and that is how he likes it. He plays the man who was already there when the scene began: the hired hand, the brother-in-law, the face at the end of the bar. In *Room* (2015) he is Old Nick, the man Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay spend the film surviving, and what he brings is restraint. He is not a monster out of a horror picture. He is a man who thinks he is being reasonable. We found that ordinariness harder to sit through than any shouting would have been, because it makes the situation feel like something that could be happening two streets away. He has been at it since 1991, mostly in small film parts, television films and guest spots, and the work that built his standing was on television.
