## Fi1m on Sebastian Koch

> Sebastian Koch is at his most persuasive when he lets an intelligent man seem comfortable in his own skin. We recommend *The Lives of Others* for precisely that quality, even when the film works too hard to secure our sympathy.

In *The Lives of Others* (2006), Sebastian Koch lets the playwright Georg Dreyman seem at ease. That matters in a surveillance thriller which could easily reduce the watched man to a list of reasons to care about him. Koch gives us someone who seems to have existed before the scrutiny began, without the strain of an actor asking to be admired for playing a decent person. We were moved by the threat to his relationship with Martina Gedeck's Sieland, because the performances make the intrusion feel personal.

The broader career took shape in German television dramas, with a breakthrough between 1997 and 2002. The international turn came with *The Lives of Others* and Paul Verhoeven's *Black Book* (2006), in which he played Ludwig Müntze. He later played Wolfgang Vogel in Spielberg's *Bridge of Spies* (2015). Across those moves, he has remained a plausible choice for artists and officials under pressure. We value his ability to suggest intelligence without making a display of it; these men seem accustomed to being listened to.

Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck gives him a particularly good use for that quality in *The Lives of Others*, though the direction also sets its limits. Koch keeps Dreyman from becoming a ready-made emblem of resistance; Donnersmarck is less willing to leave us uncertain about who deserves sympathy. Gedeck helps by making Sieland's vulnerability uncomfortable rather than simply appealing. Our reservation is with the film's insistence on directing our feelings, not with Koch's ability to earn them. A little more uncertainty would have given this performance more room.

His second Donnersmarck film, *Never Look Away* (2018), casts him as the chilling doctor Carl Seeband. That is a useful reminder that his authority can serve an unsympathetic figure too. We would welcome more parts that keep us uncertain about a man who seems so sure of himself, and fewer scripts that settle the matter for us. Start with *The Lives of Others*, and watch how little Koch needs to do to make Dreyman worth worrying about.

Koch gained wider recognition for his performance as Georg Dreyman in Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's *The Lives of Others* (2006).
