## Fi1m on Sera Gamble

> Sera Gamble makes familiar romantic and fantasy stories less comfortable by questioning the people at their centre. We rate the tension and black comedy of *You*, though its writing too often explains what we have already understood.

In *You* (2018), a bookshop manager watches a customer and begins to talk himself into an obsessive pursuit. Joe Goldberg's voice-over makes his interest sound reasonable even as courtship becomes surveillance. We laughed at his excuses, then felt uncomfortable about how readily Penn Badgley had kept us listening. Sera Gamble, who created the series with Greg Berlanti, is strongest here when she gives Joe enough time to make his own case worse. The thriller is worth watching for that tension, rather less so for its warnings about online vanity.

Gamble's route to creating series ran through *Supernatural* (2005), where she progressed from staff writer and story editor to showrunner for seasons six and seven. She then co-created *The Magicians* (2015) with John McNamara, adapting Lev Grossman's novels, before developing *You* from Caroline Kepnes's books with Berlanti. These adaptations leave her room to expand the characters and reconsider the familiar promises of fantasy and romance. Across the fantasy and the stalker thriller, she questions who gets to be the hero and mixes dark material with humour.

*You* gives that habit a precise setting: Manhattan's literary milieu, where an encounter in a bookshop can look like the beginning of a romance. Gamble and Berlanti let Joe's explanations do much of the work, and Badgley's performance keeps the programme entertaining without making its premise comfortable. Editors Gaston Jaren Lopez and Troy Takaki are among those responsible for the quick shifts between psychological threat and black comedy. We can see the appeal of keeping those shifts brisk, though the plotting often finds another complication before it has properly examined the last.

The writing becomes less persuasive when it turns to literary pretension and online vanity. The jokes broaden and the warnings grow insistent, as though Joe's excuses had not already given us enough to think about. That is our reservation about Gamble here: she has found a telling way into a familiar story, then keeps stopping to tell us what it means. Start with *You* for the uncomfortable comedy, and expect the occasional lecture.

## Biography

Sera Gamble is an American television writer and producer. She graduated from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. Her early work included a finalist appearance on the second season of Project Greenlight in 2003, followed by writing for the series Eyes.

Gamble joined the writing staff of Supernatural (2005) in its first season. She contributed scripts across the first seven seasons, served as story editor and executive producer, and became showrunner for seasons six and seven. She later co-created and served as showrunner on You (2018) with Greg Berlanti, and worked as showrunner on The Magicians (2015). She also wrote for Aquarius (2015).
