## Biography

Sergei Mikhailovich Tretyakov (also credited as Sergey Tretyakov) was a Soviet Russian constructivist writer, playwright and poet. Born on 20 June 1892 in Goldingen (now Kuldīga), Latvia, he graduated from the law department of Moscow University in 1916. He began publishing in 1913 and became associated with the ego-futurists before the Russian Revolution.

Tretyakov was a founder of the constructivist journal *LEF* (1923–1925) and its successor *Novyi LEF*. He collaborated with Vsevolod Meyerhold and Sergei Eisenstein on several plays in the early 1920s. He wrote the intertitles for Eisenstein’s *Battleship Potemkin* (1925) and the screenplay for *Salt for Svanetia* (1930). Other notable works include the plays *Earth Rampant* (1923) and *Roar, China!* (1926).

He was arrested during the Great Purge and died in Moscow on 10 September 1937. He was posthumously rehabilitated in 1956.
